Space ships, action, adventure-all tied together with a strong dollop of romance and clan intrigue-make this a compelling series for a wide range of readers, from romance to military SF lovers. The kompani see none as an enemy, and yet few as friend. The kompani exist in many places, living quietly in the shadows, thriving off the bounty that others have no wit to secure, nor skill to defend. Their private history is unwritten; their recall rooted in dance and dream. The Clan Korval is in many ways the opposite of the kompani. The interstellar trading clan is wealthy in enemies, fortunate in friends. Korval protects itself with vigor, and teaches even its youngest children the art of war.And when representatives of Clan Korval arrive on the planet Surebleak where the kompani has lived, secret and aloof, the lives of three people intersect- Kezzi, apprentice to the kompani's grandmother; Syl Vor, Clan Korval's youngest warrior; and Rys, a man without a world, or a past.Necessity's Child is a standalone adventure in the popular and exciting Liaden Universer. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Necessity's Child - A Brother's Care
A Liaden novel on the planet Surebleak, which follows the paths of two men -one older and one young- as they work to recover of themselves what was lost. Surrounded by women of strength, will, and wisdom, each shows unimaginable bravery and gains an important measure of peace -for them selves, their families and their world.
Lee and Miller know so very well the hearts and minds of children that it is a joy to follow both the younger and the older characters in this story. A step outside the "typical" Liaden character arcs, we learn more of Syl Vor and Nova, while learning of a new faction on Surebleak -the Bedel. Very respectfully based on the Rom/traveler culture, this kompani of the Bedel must ally with the gadje around them to ensure survival (and even possible rescue). At a time when the Tree and Dragon need allies most, they find another in the most unlikely of places, and ways-through the hearts (and anger) of their children.
Love it!
I'm in love with the mystery of the Bedel people and their culture and so curious as to where their ship might be! Throughly enjoyed seeing Korval and Surebleak from a different perspective.
