William Gibson’s influential novel came out in 1984, years before most people had heard of the internet. While cyberspace—a term Gibson coined in an earlier story—hasn’t quite turned out like the author predicted, the book remains a head-spinning science fiction classic. The plot is deceptively simple: Suicidal superhacker Case and his razor-clawed new partner Molly are tasked with tracking down a sentient artificial intelligence. But Gibson’s grimy mystery pushes them into the half-virtual world of the Sprawl, a dystopian megacity ruled by corporations and criminals. Great Story if you can understand it
I love the cyberpunk theme I personally just had a hard time reading it. Mr Gibson does an amazing job world building almost to a psychotic level. Characters make you feel something as you read whether pity or anger. Overall great book kind of confusing.
Books don't get better than this!
If you live in the modern world... If you use a computer... If you have ever been "on" the Internet... If you like a good story... If you like strong, vivid prose... Then you must read this book.
A Few Diamonds in this Dustbin
There are a few ideas here that are pretty impressively prescient, given when the book was written. And there are some strong characters and vivid action scenes. But the plot is really a wreck. Quite difficult to follow in terms of what’s going on. Lots of first person narration from very drug-addled or tech-distorted perspectives. The number of people who give this 5 stars leaves me baffled. It’s a badly written book with a few strong points.
