No Known Position

In 1703, Tobias Hext takes a paid berth aboard the Diligence, a trading ship bound from the Coromandel Coast into the eastern Indian Ocean. Her captain is capable, her cargo disputed, and her stores already becoming a matter of argument.

Tobias can take a sounding, reckon a distance, and recognize a dangerous coast. But after a storm carries the ship toward an unfamiliar landfall, the records he finds describe a history the Diligence has not yet lived.

The ship still needs food and repairs. Her pilot has obligations ashore. The merchant traveling with her has goods to protect and a future of her own to choose. And Tobias's skill has already helped the captain do something he cannot honestly call a mistake.

As the voyage draws them through strange ports and conflicting accounts, finding a way home becomes inseparable from deciding which claims to trust, whose passage to secure, and what Tobias will finally put his name to.
