Publisher Description

National Bestseller: The “powerful novel” about the hidden side of pro football, written by a former NFL player (Newsweek).
On the field, the men who play football are gladiators, titans, and every other kind of cliché. But when they leave the locker room they are only men. Peter Gent’s classic novel looks at the seedy underbelly of the pro game, chronicling eight days in the life of Phil Elliott, an aging receiver for the Texas team. Running on a mixture of painkillers and cortisone as he tries to keep his fading legs strong, Elliott tries to get every ounce of pleasure out of his last days of glory, living the life of sex, drugs, and football. Adapted for the screen in 1979, this novel, written by ex-Dallas Cowboy Peter Gent, is widely considered the best football novel of all time.

Entertaining page turner, if not a bit overwrought

A fascinating read about pro football from time when the mega machine that is today’s NFL was still emerging. Dark and nihilistic- more so than the movie- Gent’s perspective as a former pro player, and droll observations on human weakness, are compelling. A bit overwrought at times - the bleakness can be unrelenting- it’s still a recommended read for football fans and anyone with a taste for the grimy underside of the modern business world.

This is a great book!

I had always heard about this movie and how good it was but I had never seen it. One day while I was in the Navy i went into the ships library and saw this book. I picked it up and started to read it, I couldn't put it down, this was a great read for myself as a Cowboy fan and in general as a guy. I finished it in about two days and am still raving about it to my friends. I had searched for it at book stores but hadn't seen it around. Im glad that iTunes finally added it to their library so i can enjoy it on my phone. I later did see the movie it stared nick nolte and a native of my home town Lubbock Tx, Mac Davis and the movie pales in comparison to the book.
