Publisher Description
Barely escaping mob violence in New London, Hubert Delaroche, a descendant of Cedric the Forester, volunteers as a messenger during the War of 1812, as he is too young to enlist.
Commodore Decatur’s attempt to run a British blockade forces Hubert to escape through the Cumberland Mountains to Tennessee.
There he joins Andrew Jackson’s army and makes a new friend, a Shawnee Indian named Blue Feather.
This is an excellent living book, brining the War of 1812 to life!
Bernard Marshall is a Newbery Honor winner for his book, Cedric the Forester, which is the first of the Delaroche Family series that follows Cedric’s descendants through important historical periods like the English Civil War (The Torch Bearers), the Revolutionary War (Redcoat and Minuteman), and the War of 1812 (Old Hickory’s Prisoner).
Customer Reviews
Great historical fiction for teen boys!
This was the fastest-paced of the Bernard Shaw books we’ve read. (And they’ve all been pretty good.) It starts out right away with a life threatening situation. We finished it in about 6 days of reading.
My 12-year-old complained that he wanted to read fantasy, but he ended up being sucked into the story in spite of himself.
The story fit in perfectly with another son’s history class as he was currently learning about Andrew Jackson and the War of 1812.
