Publisher Description
A tale of the days of Roundheads and Cavaliers during the English Civil War in 17th century England. The hero is Myles Delaroche, a descendant of Cedric the Forester. Myles, a principled Roundhead and Puritan, befriends Arthur Hilsdale, his polar opposite, after besting him in a near fatal sword fight at school. As civil war breaks out, they grow into manhood, and arise to prominence in their respective circles, Myles learns to love and respect Arthur for his humanity and goodness despite ideological differences in almost every area of life.
This is an excellent living book, bringing the English Civil War to life!
Bernard Marshal is a Newbery Honor winner for his book, Cedric the Forester, which is the first of The Delaroche Family series, that follows Cedric's descendants through important historical periods like the English Civil War (The Torch Bearers), the Revolutionary War (Redcoat and Minuteman), and the War of 1812 (Old Hickory's Prisoner).
Customer Reviews
Fast-paced historical fiction
This was another great historical fiction book by Bernard Marshall that appeals to boys. My kids were surprised to discover this is a sequel to Cedric the Forester.
We read it out loud, and I’d say my 15-year-old son was the most interested. He made occasional comments on the story and also about interesting tidbits or things he already knew about the time period surrounding the English Civil War.
There is a bit of a slog about 7/8th through the book, where the history bogs the story down a bit, but it winds up quick for a nail-biting conclusion.
