Publisher Description
Oliver, raised by two women in Boston, goes to Rome during a summer break from college to meet his biological father. Their long-anticipated meeting forces each to face deep and complex questions about their sexual identity in the shadows of the Vatican. Intrigue abounds as Oliver falls in love with a handsome Roman man, Giancarlo. Their sudden and all-consuming relationship sets in motion a series of twists and turns, some fortuitous and others tragic. The plot unfolds against Roman history and the art and patrimony of the Church – with magnificent descriptions of each. The book is a touching coming of age story, a romantic tale, and a rich and in-depth exploration of whether the Catholic Church has the theological capacity and the political will to embrace gay relationships.
Customer Reviews
Insightful and moving
Oliver and Henry is very unique. While fiction it deals with real life issues of being gay and the complex matters of heart and faith. While almost a romantic fantasy it touches real matters of moral choices, fear and the power of love as well as faith. It is well written and inspiring.
Oliver and Henry
I loved this book. Having been to Rome, the descriptions of Oliver touring the Eternal City as he meets his fatherfor the first time were evocative and wonderful. This is a tale of a young man from an unconventional family, meeting his biological father—a priest. In the process he discovers himself. His encounter brings him into dialogue and disagreement with the Church in which he was raised. The novel is provocative and heart warming. A wonderful read.
