Publisher Description
“The 80:20 rule” states 80% progress comes from just 20% of effort expended. Introductory organic chemistry follows this rule. The first subjects in introduced amount to about 20% of the course, but they tend to account for 80% of the value. These are: (i) bonding and hybridization; (ii) conformations of hydrocarbons (and how to draw organic structures); (iii) fragments and functional groups; (iv) conformations of cyclic hydrocarbons; (v) curly arrows to depict electron flow; (vi) resonance; (vii) acids and bases: (viii) priority rules; and, (ix) chirality. Τhose are the chapters in this book. Students who understand these nine topics well and early almost inevitably do well. Those who do not suffer because these keep coming up over the whole course. Students who understand these nine topics well and early almost inevitably do well, and this eworkbook is designed to help them. This workbook is animated with a series of videos introducing each subject, interleaved with sets of problems to encourage students to understand by application. Lots of videos are provided because these subjects are so important. The intention is students should watch the videos in the order they are introduced in the book, then try to answer the problems covering theory and applications of each subject. This eworkbook is designed to challenge undergraduates so they should be able handle all reasonable questions on this subject; excellent, easy problem set books are available elsewhere. Answers to all the problems are online at byinquisition.org, but students should avoid looking at them until they have studiously tried to answer. All the videos linked to in this book are freely available on YouTube. In the Books application, they can be viewed within the text; this is a considerable advantage with respect to protecting students from the temptation to click on other offerings that simply seem interesting, ie reducing opportunities to be distracted. This book is set at a much reduced introductory price for six months from Aug 1, 2024. Preliminary versions of each chapter in this eworkbook were originally offered individually, but they have now been discontinued; the current version is much improved. This book is set at a much reduced introductory price for six months from Aug 1, 2024.
