Athena Smythe is obsessed with survival. Throughout the war, everything she did was about getting out alive.

Deferring to abusive parents. Refusing to use her magic. Trying to be more human. Learning how to look meek and pretty. Following every command in the re-education centre. Cutting off her brother who wouldn’t fall in line.

Everything was about surviving the war.

Then the war ended.

So now she’s safe, what is she supposed to do?

With no career or university aspirations, Athena looks around an Australia trying to cover from war, her community trying to recover from an attempted genocide, and the people in charge failing to help.

She looks and tries to turn away to focus on her own survival again.

Then an angel asks her to become princess.
