Why so cruel?

This could have been a good book full of excitement. However I was sickened by the author’s need to use such sick and cruel treatment of a person. I’m sure no one would survive what the “doctor “ put the main character through. Was that part of the story line really necessary? So gross and graphic. Where did the author even come up with such sick treatment? Makes me wonder what this author has been through in real life. She should see a doctor not spread such cruel ideas.
