Another winner
Ravensong is an unmarked treasure that initially suffers from a bit of second book syndrome. The world that felt fresh in the first book now lacks that novelty, making the beginning slower. But TJ Klune quickly surpasses this with his mastery of complex characters and his ability to depict raw emotions—loss, anger, and hurt. The focus shifts to the witches and their role within the pack, adding new layers to the lore and expanding our understanding of this world. The dynamics between wolves and witches are explored in a way that feels essential, showing how intertwined their fates are. The story is packed with plot twists and betrayals that even the most seasoned fantasy reader wouldn’t expect, keeping you on the edge of your seat. However, the smut in the previous book was better and more frequent. Despite this, Ravensong is a compelling continuation of the series, rich in character and emotional depth. It’s a must-read for fans of intense, character-driven fantasy who are ready for a story that delves deeper into the complexities of its characters and world.
It was fine.
The first 50-70 pages were really good but then it kinda dragged on. It became almost a chore to read. I also personally didn’t like the almost sitcom nature it took on, every character speaking in turn, and the jokes felt incredibly juvenile, even though the characters making them were adults. The buildup to the end didn’t feel incredibly earned, and the villain wasn’t incredibly fleshed out. If not for the fact that it was a TJ Klune book there would have been nothing good to say at all but at least the book has his signature charm that made it okay. Not as good as the first by a long shot, but if you’re obsessed with this universe and desperate for more it will do it’s job.
