APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic romance hasn’t gone out of print since it was first published in 1938, and with good reason. When an unnamed and naïve young woman meets the widowed Maxim, she’s swept up by his charm. After a brief courtship, they move into his sumptuous estate, Manderley. But this fairy-tale idyll soon turns dark—Maxim’s first wife, Rebecca, died under mysterious circumstances, and the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, may be waging a subtle campaign of terror against Maxim and his new bride. Rebecca absolutely shimmers with ominous dread, supernatural paranoia, and steadily increasing suspense. Du Maurier creates an incredibly vivid world, where everything—from fashion to nature to the mansion at Manderley itself—has sinister overtones, and where every living character feels haunted. Think Downton Abbey if it were given a rewrite by Sylvia Plath. And watch out for the housekeeper.

A Classic That Actually Works
This isn’t the kind of book I usually read, but Rebecca was on sale and I decided to give it a shot. I’ve been trying to read more classics, and this one genuinely surprised me. From early on, you can tell there’s something going on beneath the surface, but it’s hard to pin down. The real story is buried deep in the book, slowly revealing itself, and that’s what makes it so effective.
The setting and time period fit the story perfectly and give it a strong atmosphere. The writing is very good and keeps the tension steady throughout. It’s not my favorite book, but it’s definitely one people should read at least once. It’s a long book, but the payoff makes it worth the time.
Disconcerting and engaging at once
I’m sure there are millions of reviews on this book as it’s been around for a very long time. But I would encourage any reader to read this story. Spoiler - pay close attention in the first couple of chapters! I breezed through them because I thought they were rather boring, but as i read and then got to the end, I realized what an important part those first two chapters played, so after finishing the book I went back and reread the first two chapters. An amazing mystery/thriller/love story/ period piece all in one book! She was an incredible writer!
what a twist
i was assigned this book for a class and from the synopsis the teacher gave me, i was already bored of it before i even started!! You begin reading the booking thinking it’s about a self conscious, meek girl trying to impress her hubby.... boy does that end quick!! the twist, the mystery, the excitement when the truth starts u raveling REALLY made this book a winner. Would read 10x over :)
