Publisher Description
A one-of-a-kind novel that grapples with the supernatural mysteries of life, death, and human connection—an unprecedented collaboration between the globally bestselling author of love stories like The Notebook and the renowned writer and director of blockbuster thrillers like The Sixth Sense
COMING SOON AS A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN AND STARRING JAKE GYLLENHAAL AND PHOEBE DYNEVOR
When New York architect Tate Donovan arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home, he is hoping to make a fresh start. Recently discharged from an upscale psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression, he is still wrestling with the pain of losing his beloved sister. Sylvia’s deathbed revelation—that she can see spirits who are still tethered to the living world, a gift that runs in their family—sits uneasily with Tate, who struggles to believe in more than what reason can explain. But when he takes up residence at a historic bed-and-breakfast on the Cape, he encounters a beautiful young woman named Wren who will challenge every assumption he has about his logical and controlled world.
Tate and Wren find themselves forging an immediate connection, one that neither has ever experienced before. But Tate gradually discovers that below the surface of Wren’s idyllic small-town life, hatred, jealousy, and greed are festering, threatening their fragile relationship just as it begins to blossom. Tate realizes that in order to free Wren from an increasingly desperate fate, he will need to unearth the truth about her past before time runs out . . . a quest that will make him doubt whether we can ever believe the stories we tell about ourselves, and the laws that govern our existence. Love—while transformative—can sometimes be frightening.
A story about the power of transcendent emotion, Remain asks us all: Can love set us free not only from our greatest sorrows, but even from the boundaries of life and death?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
An unlikely but welcome collaboration between two creative icons, Remain marries a supernatural love story with slow-burn tension. Seeking a reset after being treated for depression, New York architect Tate Donovan heads to Cape Cod to design a friend’s beach house. His late sister once claimed their family could see spirits, a belief he resists until he’s drawn to a woman named Wren. As their bond deepens, small-town grudges and buried secrets begin to endanger Wren, forcing Tate to confront what he truly believes and what he’s willing to risk. Against the offseason hush of Cape Cod’s wind-scrubbed beaches, Nicholas Sparks supplies his trademark warm, clear emotional beats while filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan threads in unease and misdirection. Together, they shape well-earned twists around a grounded romance and turn questions of grief, faith, and memory into propulsive drama. Moody and affecting, this novel asks how far love can reach: into the past, into the unseen, and into the parts of ourselves we try hardest to deny.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Sparks (The Notebook) and filmmaker Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) combine their talents to create a paranormal love story that makes suspension of disbelief easy through thoughtful characterization. Architect Tate Donovan entered a "paralyzing" depression following the death of his sister and closest confidante, Sylvia, leading to a four-month stay in a psychiatric hospital at the urging of his best friend, Oscar. Now readjusting to day-to-day life, Tate takes a room in a Cape Cod estate while helping Oscar to design and build a vacation home nearby. That banal assignment takes an odd turn when Tate catches sight of an attractive stranger in the house where he's staying. When Tate asks around, the property's groundskeeper remarks that his description of the woman sounds like Wren Tobin, who died in the house almost two years prior. Tate comes to believe that he's seen a ghost, which does nothing to stop him from falling for her when they meet again. He also becomes preoccupied with resolving the mystery tethering Wren to the house: the possibility that she was murdered. The mystery chugs along nicely but the romance is the stronger plot, and the authors deserve credit for making the relationship between the living and the dead moving. Fans of both authors will not be disappointed.

Kinda What I expected
I would say I enjoyed the book overall. The writing was good, I enjoyed the plot and I really liked the characters. However, there are only so many ways a book like this can end and I’m not going to say I didn’t like the ending, but it wasn’t quite the one I wanted. I never been the person who likes “realist ending.”
A chilling tale that captures love and loss equally
With a heavy yet satisfied heart, Remain wove the tale of desire and grief together like long lost friends. A must read for those finding their place in the world & for those dancing in grief’s circles.
