Publisher Description
A deadly secret from the past resurfaces in this heart-pounding thriller from New York Times bestselling author David Golemon.
In 1887, brilliant American professor Lawrence Ambrose was contracted by the British Empire to create a mutant gene that would turn ordinary people into aggressive fighting machines. But when a streak of vicious murders was linked back to Ambrose, a massive cover-up was ordered by Queen Victoria to terminate the project and Ambrose himself. Thus, the legend of Jack the Ripper was born.
The killings stopped as suddenly as they had begun—but not because Ambrose was caught. He escaped back to America, where he and his formula faded into history. But in 2012, a raid against a Mexican drug lord uncovers a cache of antiquated notebooks containing the long-buried instructions to create blind killers out of normal men. Enter the Event Group and Col. Jack Collins, desperate to stop one of their most feared enemies. When the formula is unleashed in the underground halls of the Event Group complex itself, brother will battle brother, and they will understand the true meaning of fear.
In this next heart-stopping installment of the New York Times bestselling Event Group series, Ripper takes readers to new levels of suspense in a non-stop thrill ride where death could be hiding around any corner.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Golemon's seventh Event Group thriller (after 2011's Legacy) is strong on ideas but weak on execution. In 1888, as Jack the Ripper butchers his last victim, Robert Louis Stevenson approaches Scotland Yard with information regarding the killer's identity related to the real-life inspiration for his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, American chemist Lawrence Ambrose. The scene shifts to present-day Mexico, where armed men in the service of the vicious drug lord known as the Anaconda attack geologist Sarah McIntire, a member of the shadowy U.S. government agency known as the Event Group, and her team while they're exploring caves used as weapons caches by Pancho Villa. McIntire's capture prompts the dispatch of an Event Group rescue team, guided by secret information from Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing's 1916 raid into Mexico that ultimately connects to the Ripper murders. Golemon throws a lot into the pot, but the action sequences and stoic heroes are strictly run-of-the-mill.
