Jane Austen’s unfinished novel has been completed at last—and in the most delightful manner. Kate Riordan, author of the wonderful historical thriller The Girl in the Photograph, picks up the mantle, working off of the 11 chapters Austen completed before her death in 1817. Sanditon is the story of Charlotte Heywood, a well-bred young woman whose adventurous nature leads her to a quiet fishing village that local landowner Tom Parker hopes to turn into a trendy holiday destination. As Charlotte mingles with the town’s charmingly peculiar dwellers, she encounters Tom’s mysterious and dashing brother, Sidney. Riordan blends historical accuracy with a pinch of modern sense and sensibility to flesh out the novel’s secondary players, including Austen’s first black character, an heiress from the West Indies. We love how she manages to put an entertaining contemporary spin on a story of transformation—Charlotte goes from wide-eyed ingenue to a woman who goes after what she wants—that feels extremely true to Austen’s time and place.

The story was very good, bad ending.
I enjoyed the story and did think the narrative blended well. The end was unsatisfying and felt rushed.
Let down to Jane Austen’s Legacy
I wanted to like it, but I simply don’t believe it’s true to how Austen would’ve told the story. The ending I find most annoying as it’s not Austen’s style. If you’re trying to finish this to honor her, why not try to make it more like something she would’ve written herself??
The Joy of Jane
Andrew Davies doesn’t disappoint when doing this adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel. If you like the Regency era this scenes and clothing of the day are lovely. Best of all every actor gives a 100% in what they say, don’t say and express on their face. The chemistry between Rose Williams and Theo James is like none I have seen on screen EVER! If you want to escape realty, laugh and cry give it a watch. Casting is set for this summer of 2021 because this story must continue 🎩👒
