Prompted by images from his drug-induced post-surgical dreams, the detective resolves to deal with two sources of guilt he has buried for years: the never-solved 1973 murder of coed Monica Wellington, his first homicide assignment with the Seattle PD; and his failure to seek out the fianc e left behind by the platoon leader who saved his life in Vietnam, 2nd Lt. Lennie Davis. But no sooner does Beau persuade his current boss to reopen the Wellington probe than the supposedly cold case explodes with tragic consequences and strong suggestions of police corruption. Though the book begins in overly leisurely fashion, plot and pacing soon kick into high gear. In a memorable afterword, Jance relates the heartbreaking story of the real Lennie Davis, a high school friend of hers back in Bisbee, Ariz.

Enlightened
Midway through this awesome book I was sadden because I had the sense that J.A. Jance's writing skills were beginning to fade with age.
There is a conversation with Ross Conners that does not take into account a previous (important) one that is crucial to the main plot. I thought she had forgotten about that conversation - which was crucial to the re-opening of the cold case, the crux of the mystery for Second Watch.
It was only at the end of the book that I realized that the author was most likely just distracted by one of the sub-plots running throughout the book. The story of the soldier was very personal to her and his history completely factual other than the main character tie-ins. I am sure she was more focused on that storyline than the one that allowed her to classify the book under the Mystery Genre.
Overall a very good read and I look forward to future books in this series.

Second Watch is a masterful interweaving blend of decisions many of us make in life that rise to the forefront during stressful times.
J A Jance is masterful as she brings J P Beaumont through solving past, haunting life experiences to closure while taking fact and fiction to new levels of reality.
Great read.
