Needs Work
This book shows promise and involves serious subject matter that deserves discourse.
Early in the story, the female lead denies PTSD. However, ensuing events include clear symptoms of post traumatic stress, initial denial and later dreams, regarding what happened to her. This serves the reading audience poorly, to write a story with a plot that ignores ptsd. Info on ptsd and assault can be found on the Internet.
When writing paranormal, fantasy or sci-fi, the principle of suspension of disbelief should be followed, getting ordinary things right, believable and proper, so the paranormal becomes easier to suspend disbelief about. The YA, high school aspects seem overwrought, but perhaps that's the intended style for this book.
There is some letdown in believability, although the enjoyable paranormal aspects do show up, if suddenly for the female lead, almost in a deus ex machina way. Hopefully the sequel will avoid these issues, as the female lead develops further from the story point and characterization that exists at the cliffhanger end of this book.
