Amazing Book!
This is an amazing book. It has the original “Sheepdog” essay in the back, which can be life-changing for people of all ages. But the bulk of the book is the “sheepdog concept” presented, with wonderful illustrations, in a way that children, starting at about five-years-old, can understand.
School librarians tell us that anything about military or law enforcement, is eagerly sought out in their libraries, and this would be a great book for school libraries, from elementary to high school.
The book is primarily about military and law enforcement, but it also helps children understand that normal people can be sheepdogs at the moment of truth, with a reference Flight 93 on 9-11 that chokes me up when I read it to my grandkids. There are a couple of parts that choke me up a little, especially when it wraps up with a powerful message: “They are not heroes because they die. They are heroes because they go out the door, every day, prepared to lay down their lives… Sometimes the ultimate love is not to sacrifice your life, but to live a life of sacrifice.”
If you have been to one of Col. Grossman’s seminars, you know that the cover image, of the little lamb hiding behind a soldier, is actually based on a real photograph. Go to Google Images and type in “boy hiding behind soldier” and that photo will come right up. The book uses this image to explain that, “The wolf, the coward, will use the lambs as human shields. But the sheepdog is a human shield for the lambs.”
Bottom line: highly recommended for kids from 5 to 95!
