From USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Jennifer Bernard comes a friends-to-lovers standalone romance in the Lost Harbor, Alaska series.
Graduate degree in hand, Ruthie Malone has returned to her Alaska hometown to prove she’s not the same awkward girl everyone remembers. And she’s definitely made an impression—stirring a hornet’s nest of old secrets with her research into Lost Harbor’s forgotten past. Seems the only person in her corner is her new coworker, a Scottish chef who’s as surly as he is sexy—and a close friend. Which means hands off.
Alastair Dougal first visited Lost Harbor seeking answers to his sister’s tragic death, but the charming town keeps calling him back, again and again. Now he’s taken temporary work and has become unlikely friends with a nerdy redhead who’s equal parts quirky and exasperating. But when a nasty part of his past comes calling, it’s Ruthie who has his back—and his attention, after she reveals a side that’s less shy historian, more sensual hottie.
Busy trying to uncover old secrets, Ruthie and Alastair don’t want to ruin their friendship…until one wild beach bonfire puts them on course for a slow burn by starlight.

Ruthie & Alastair
After earning her degree, Ruthie Malone returns to Lost Habor with something to prove. She is determined to prove to everyone that she’s not the awkward, shy girl anymore. She’s confident, determined, strong, and quirky. It’s the quirky that attracts Alastair Dougal. While they’re best of friends, Ruthie is hung up on Ralphie—her childhood friend. So Alastair takes a step back to allow Ruthie to work through her feelings. While working to make the historical museum a vacationers hotspot, Ruthie decides to conduct an oral history of Lost Harbor. Never in a million years did she think her “project” would tear the town apart.
Alastair Dougal first came to the Lost Harbor area in search of answers. His sister and her husband were victims of a tragic plane crash. He felt as though there was more to the crash, so he arrived to conduct his own investigation. It was his quirky, sexy sous chef that kept him coming back for more.
I loved the honesty the most in this novel. Ruthie WAS odd, quirky, nerdy, and curvy. She was NOT model perfect! Like so many women, we are so self conscious about our bodies, that I enjoyed seeing a really fit, gorgeous man fall for a curvy woman. It made the story more relatable. I have never read a Jennifer Bernard novel I didn’t enjoy. Loved it and highly recommend the entire series. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
Ruthie’s story
I have loved every book I’ve read by Jennifer Bernard and Slow Burn by Starlight is no exception. This book is centered around Ruthie and Alastair, although, at first you think she’s going to be with Ralphie. She’s had a crush on Ralphie for years, but the more time she spends with Alastair, the more she thinks about him. They’re work spouses, but could they be more? I loved the mystery that was involved in this story and how some of the elders didn’t want it to be revealed. We even learn the truth about Ruthie adoption. No clues from me, so grab your copy and catch up with some of the previous characters and fall in love with Lost Harbor, Alaska once again. I can’t wait to see what this author has for us next.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
The complete package
A beautiful and sweet romance in the charming town of Lost Harbor, Alaska kept me glued to the pages. It is always a good time to read about the colorful residents of this small town.
I adore Ruthie with her honesty and vulnerabilities. She just grabbed my heart. Alastair is an incredible friend to Ruthie and I love how he accepts all of her ‘quirks’ without question. He has his own insecurities but, when he realizes what a gift Ruthie is, he doesn’t hold back. Their respect and support of each other is a special bond that holds them together through the difficult times.
I really enjoyed Ruthie and Alastair’s story. They are a complete match in every way. I highly recommend this book and series for all romantics.
