The 2008 financial crash provides the backdrop for J nasson's sterling debut, a tale of past and present revenge, which combines the power of extreme climate and geography with penetrating psychological analysis. Ari Th r Arason, a 24-year-old rookie policeman and former theology student, leaves his medical-student lover, Krist n, in Reykjav k for his first assignment in Siglufj rdur, an isolated village on the north coast of Iceland. As the long, dark winter settles in, Ari Th r becomes embroiled in old hurts that roil beneath the surface of Siglufj rdur, where secrets spread swiftly. The fatal fall of a drunken actor down a flight of stairs in the local theater appears to be an accident or is it? As in the medieval Icelandic sagas, small physical details produce striking characterizations ("He peered at her and his lip twisted oddly, as if he was trying to smile, but at the same time hold it back"). J nasson skillfully alternates points of view and shifts of time that set in relief Ari Th r's efforts to find a purpose to his lonely life. The action builds to a shattering climax.
Customer Reviews
Lacked luster
The complex double plot line had a lot of potential, but the organization lacked luster. It was difficult to follow. The chapters told from the victim point of view lost connection. The formula was there. The scene was set. But Snow Blind missed the mark for me.
Snowblind
Couldn't put it down. Highly recommend.
Ari Thor is a new policeman in a small town in Iceland near the Arctic Circle. A town where nothing ever happens, until Ari arrives and two murders expose buried secrets. The writing, descriptions of snow and cold, and the twists and turns kept me turning the pages.
Couldn’t wait to put it down
this ‘author’ should stick to translating his granddad’s books….he has not talent for writing
