Publisher Description
One of Publishers Weekly’s Top 10 Romances of the Fall!
New York Times bestseller, Suzanne Enoch takes a delightful new path in her joyful historical romantic comedy, Something in the Heir.
Smart, capable heiress Emmeline Pershing will do anything to keep her beloved home; and all it takes is an arranged marriage and a teeny white lie to fulfill her family’s silly inheritance rules. But now her little fib means that she and her completely unsuspecting husband are going to inherit big — and very messy! —trouble.
Emmeline and William Pershing have enjoyed a perfectly convenient marriage for eight years. Their relationship is a seamless blend of their talents and goals. They’ve settled into separate, well-ordered lives beneath the same roof, and are content to stay that way—or so Emmeline thinks. And if William has secretly longed for a bit more from the woman he adores, he’s managed to be content with her supreme skills as a hostess and planner, which has helped him advance his career.
Then when Emmeline’s grandfather, the reclusive Duke of Welshire, summons them both for his birthday celebration and demands they bring their two little angelic children, William is stunned to discover that his very proper wife invented not one, but two heirs to fulfill the agreement for living at Winnover. But surely if Emmeline and William team up and borrow two cherubs to call their own, what could go wrong? Enter George, age 8, and Rose, 5—the two most unruly orphans in Britain.
As the insanity unfolds, their careful, professional arrangement takes some surprisingly intimate turns as well. Perhaps it takes a bit of madness to create the perfect happily ever after.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
This sparkling Regency romance from Enoch (Hit Me with Your Best Scot) goes all out on madcap hijinks. Emmeline Hervey must marry and produce an heir in order to inherit her family home, so she arranges a marriage of convenience to her friend William Pershing, promising to advance his career, and, as the years pass, she invents two children, citing their poor health as the reason no one's ever seen them. The lie catches up to her, however, when she and her family are summoned to her grandfather's birthday celebration. She comes clean to a shocked Will and they do the only thing they can think of: make a generous donation to a local orphanage to borrow eight-year-old George and his five-year-old sister, Rose, to play the parts. But they're not counting on the children being such formidable little troublemakers. Rose and George refuse to cooperate until the adults agree to their demands, including finding the children a suitable home at the end of their eight-week stay. And, as Emmeline and William pose as young parents in love, romance blossoms in their previously loveless marriage. The kids steal every scene they're in and Emmeline and William are a couple to root for. This adorable makeshift family is sure to win hearts.

The Plan
The plan is to marry so that Emmeline can keep the house she has always lived in. She chooses to approach her friend Will with this idea; they will be partners in advancing his political ambitions. Eight years later, Grandfather is having a party and invites them. He wants to meet the children. Well, there aren’t any. Emmeline made up a couple to appease Grandfather. From here, the story becomes one filled with secrets and humor. Where will they get two children? Will they be able to fool Grandfather? Will this experience teach them realize there is more to their relationship that a political partnership? This is a bit different, but I found it entertaining and enjoyable.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
A joy to read
Witty dialogue, enjoyable & silly plot, great ensemble of characters. Fun. This was a solid, perfect pleasure to read.
Keeps us guessing
We’ve heard of marriage of convenience… one keeps the home they’ve grown up in and the other gets to have connections to fulfill great intentions. But, I’ve never read a kids of convenience story so I enjoyed this book!!
To keep their home, Emmeline and William needed heirs by their fifth year of marriage. They eventually found siblings and they’re fun yet you want to hug them (or secretly add coins to their hidden stash).
I think the book is well paced and you’ll want to keep reading when a runaway returns to the siblings lives, and something is kindling between mama and papa!
Of course there is a happily ever after, however the author keeps us guessing how grand the HEA is until the end. I recommend this feel good book!
Thank you to Net Galley, St. Martin’s Press, and St. Martin’s Griffin for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
