PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Aaronovitch successfully mixes things up for Det. Sgt. Peter Grant in the entertaining 10th Rivers of London urban fantasy (after 2023's Amongst Our Weapons), set in an alternate contemporary Britain where magic is real. Peter, who is also a wizard, heads on vacation to Scotland with his wife, Beverley, a river goddess; their twin toddler daughters; and his parents, who insist on joining them. Naturally, the trip turns into a business holiday; Peter is drawn into a whodunit by his friend, Dr. Abdul Walid, who recruits him to make sense of the murder of a man who, Abdul was shocked to discover, has gills. The killing may be related to a recent series of attacks on sheep in the area by something that leaves bite marks resembling those of a large cat. Aaronovitch's trademark humor is in evidence through Peter's witty narration as he connects these two quirky cases. Series fans will not be disappointed.
Customer Reviews
One of the best of the series
I liked this one better than the last few. It seems more grounded, fewer alternative universes and world-threatening horrors. There is solid detective work, also, which is difficult to pull off in a fantasy. Ben’s ability to do so is one of the big reasons the Rivers of London series is such a masterwork. I was worried about Peter getting all staid and domestic with marriage and fatherhood, but he remains as quirky and smartassed as ever. I’d like to see more of him interacting with his unit in London. I’d like to see him as a boss, maybe in a story told from the viewpoint of one of the newer members of the SAU.
Wonderful to have Peter and Abigail back!
This book neatly solves the problem of wanting more Abigail in a Peter Grant story, and vice versa. It’s a delight to see both characters grow. It’s also VERY nice to have a proper Rivers of London book again.
