The search for a missing woman could tear a community apart in Elin Hilderbrand’s final book in her Nantucket series. Outgoing police chief Ed Kapenash has been called in for one last case. Colleen “Coco” Coyle, personal assistant to the uber-rich couple the Richardsons, goes missing after a sunset cruise on their yacht. But things get more complicated when it turns out Coco had ulterior motives for taking the job—and the investigation brings up uncomfortable truths about the Richardsons themselves. It might go without saying, but Hilderbrand is wonderfully well-versed in all the intimate details of Nantucket life. We became totally immersed in the island’s wealthy but quirky world of gossip and melodrama, even as the captivating mystery surrounding the Richardsons unfolded. One of this best-selling author’s best so far, Swan Song will make an excellent addition to your summer beach bag.

Hilderbrand closes out her long run of Nantucket novels (after The Five-Star Weekend) with an engrossing story of three mysterious newcomers. Leslee and Bull Richardson arrive at the multimillion-dollar house they've just purchased on Nantucket with Coco, their live-in concierge. Coco, an aspiring writer, hopes to show her screenplay to Bull, a businessman who's produced a couple of movies, and she landed the gig by lying about how well she knows the island. Larger-than-life Leslee throws lavish parties at the couple's oceanfront house, but she increasingly rubs people the wrong way—women, especially—by flirting with men who are taken. By the end, as readers will know from a flash-forward opening, the Richardsons will be largely shunned, Coco will go missing, and their house will go up in flames. In chapters exploring Bull's shady business dealings and Coco's duplicity, Hilderbrand gradually teases out exactly what happens and why. Much like my first Elin novel, the blue bistro, I couldn’t put it down. 🤍
Completely disappointed
You did not need to kill off the chief. Nothing was gained by that. Really unfortunate ending to a great series of books.
