Enjoyable read, and insightful!

I've seen Tom at local races for many years... Now that my athletic goals have increased over the years I find myself in foreign territory - that's where toms books have become a huge resource. From start to finish he guides you through each step - guiding you to the finish line... And most importantly doing it all with a smile on your face.

Thank you Tom for sharing your knowledge with us, and hope to see you on the race course!

Thank you for putting all this information in a simple and understandable format. Perfect read for anyone new or experienced to the triathlon sport. It follows my logic, keep it simple and don't over complicate things.

This was my first tri and was extremely pleased with my training and race performance. I followed the Half IM intermediate program and finished Lake Tahoe 70.3 in just over 7 hours. Disclaimer, I had a solid 10K and was running about 18-20 miles a week. I could ride my bike for about 2 hours without getting out of the saddle (it took some getting used to). I also followed the Total Immersion swimming course and was swimming for an hour without stopping before I began this program. I also tapered a week before I started (rest is actually part of training as I learned in this book).

Be reasonable, if your course has steep climbs, throw in some hills in your training, if it's all flat throw in some speed work. 90% of your workouts should be easy, just follow the plans, eat right, and sleep often. Also, I used a HRM, I had no idea what easy was supposed to be or feel like. After having a visual indication, I knew if I was going too hard or needed to bump up the intensity a notch.

Enjoy the training and don't forget to thank the volunteers at the race and thank your family for tolerating your new past time.

Perfect for Starting Out

I first got this book for a training schedule to do my first real triathlon and only thumbed through the instructional portion. After having a miserable race experience I decided to read it cover to cover before I did my next one. I was kicking myself for not reading this before my first one. Not only were my training workouts a LOT more enjoyable, and easier, they dramatically increased my speed -- dramatically! I love Tom Holland's approach to training smarter, and training safer. What's even better is I did all the beginner stuff, and now I am going back and getting more advanced stuff to take it to the next level because of how he layers the training. Highly recommend for all levels.
