Thomas Crane was an American scholar and writer, mostly known as a collector and publisher of folk-tales and legends.

 “The ass that lays money” is a legend, included in the “Italian Popular Tales” collection. The narration is about one poor widow with an only son, and whose brother-in-law is a steward. One day she says to her child: "Go to your uncle and ask him to give you something to keep you from starving”. The boy goes to the farm and asks his uncle to help him a little, and the steward gives him the little ass that lays money.
