For those that remain, there is no law, no power, no communication. And now a new kind of battle begins—on the ground, hand to hand, person to person. Can the remnants of humanity survive long enough to rebuild a world . . . or will it just take a little longer for them to die?

Good book with a nice rhythm
Good research on the likely actual effects and outcome of a nuclear exchange
Great Disaster Premise, But Ruined by Gun-toting Survivalism
Probably "shoot first, ask later" would occur after a nuclear holocaust. But the author's excessive use of scenarios in which the protagonists kill without questions asked and with little to no regret, and all those who approach them are evil, sex-starved males (except one) is ridiculous. Especially after just a week or so after the attacks. The author's love of guns and survivalism is rampant, even though it would have been OK in small doses. Unfortunately, this takes away from what would have been a good disaster premise. The author also needs to bone up on geography. Palo Alto is NOT on the coast, and would be pulverized by nuclear weapons due to it's proximity to installations in Mountain View.
