Expecting to assist in the study of a miraculous cell-regenerating substance discovered deep undersea, veterinarian Luke Nelson descends eight miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. What he finds there, in a research lab warped by incredible pressure and trapped in utter darkness, is a mounting wave of physical and mental aberrations. Something down there is testing or playing with the scientists and their lab animals. Readers watch as Luke is unpeeled, layer by layer, and reshaped into something terrible. The novel's horror is notable both for quantity and quality. Where some writers shovel gruesome details into their fiction, Cutter (The Troop) uses a front-end loader. However, his sharp observations and choice of details keep readers from getting numbed by the accumulation of catastrophes; each new shock is freshly disturbing. Genre fans will find this an admirable addition to the list of horror novels that share its title.

Confusing ending
Very suspenseful, but the ending gets weird.
Not scary and not descriptively
No time is spent lingering with the horrors of the ocean, at least not in the first 20% that I could get through. The big threat that gets the most time is the mother. I went looking for a scary book about the ocean, not a predatory fat lady. Everything is described in the same way, “it was as if” “it reminded Luke of” “it was like” Stop comparing everything and tell me how it actually is! “It felt like the ocean was pressing into the sub.” I deeply dislike it, tell me “The pressure of the ocean squeezed past the thick steel walls settling upon luke and pressing into his stomach.” The vast darkness of the ocean, its infinity of emptiness that could conceal anything in its transparency, is TERRIFYING!!! But we spent not a paragraph or two with this expanse! I wanted spooky ocean!
If you liked The Troop, you won’t like this
No likable characters, setting is predictable and annoying. Just a slog to read.
