Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, short-stories writer, whose works became the classics of English romantic literature. Being interested in legends and mysticism, Irving wrote numerous histories, tales about the travels and mystical short stories. “The Devil And Tom Walker” is one of them.

Published in 1824, “The Devil And Tom Walker” is a story about greedy, miserly Tom Walker who lives with his wife on the skirts of the town. One day Tom comes home through a swampy forest. As he stops to rest, he finds himself in front of a great black man, sitting directly opposite him on the stump of a tree. Tom will learn soon the strange man is the incarnation of the devil...
