The Dirty Shepherdess

Andrew Lang was a Scottish prolific author, mostly known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. 

“The Dirty Shepherdess” is a tale, entered in “The Green Fairy Book” collection. The story narrates about one King, who once decided to know, which of his two daughters loves him more. The words of the younger do not like to the King, and he orders her to quit the court.  Crying, she goes through the wood until she comes to a farm. Wishing to get the work, but knowing that no housewife would want to engage a girl with such a pretty face, the princess smears mud all over her hands and face, making herself as ugly as she could, and goes to offering herself as a goose-girl or shepherdess… What destiny is waiting for princess and how will the story end?
