Publisher Description

“Rings with authentic detail and clearly descriptive sights and smells . . . The Drifters is to the generation gap what The Source was to Israel.”—Publishers Weekly

In this triumphant bestseller, renowned novelist James A. Michener unfolds a powerful and poignant drama of disenchanted youth during the Vietnam era. Against exotic backdrops including Spain, Morocco, and Mozambique, he weaves together the heady dreams, shocking tribulations, and heartwarming bonds of six young runaways cast adrift in the world—as well as the hedonistic pursuit of drugs and pleasure that collapses all around them. With the sure touch of a master, Michener pulls us into the private world of these unforgettable characters, exposing their innermost desires with remarkable candor and infinite compassion.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii.

Sated! ,

The Drifters

The six young drifters and various locations are as well described as I remember them being when I read this fifty years ago. He has wonderful observations. However, I get the feeling that Michener wanted to tell us EVERYTHING he knew. He definitely needed a better editor. Too much information becomes annoying. I DID enjoy being taken back into that era and recommend that it be read again OR for the first time.

Very interesting 🧐

For me, this was a very intriguing story. And within that story, there were many other stories each as intriguing as the next. Some sad, some ended good. An interesting tale about a group of very different 20 somethings trying to find that way through life during the Vietnam war.

Read it again

I read this book for the first time in around 1977-78 and I loved it! I was in high school and open to lots of ideas etc.
I still love this book and want to read it again and again 😎🤓😍
