Profoundly unsympathetic
A few chapters into Fall of Io I remembered what had bothered me about the previous book of the series: the protagonist, Ella, is deeply unsympathetic. She’s impulsive, ignorant, and written to consistently make terrible decisions. A few displays of personal loyalty in the story don’t make up for her other flaws. The presence of the series’ original protagonist in this book doesn’t help things. Roen starts off as a mopey slob but grows as a character through his books. His fundamental core is good despite his flaws. Ella’s character remains mired in a slum rat mentality despite everything.
