Publisher Description
From the author of Luckiest Girl Alive—now a Netflix film—comes the “engrossing” (People) New York Times bestseller starring two sisters who join the cast of a reality TV series…and only one will make it out alive.
Brett and Kelly have always toed the line between supportive sisters and bitter rivals. Growing up, Brett was the problem child, living in the shadow of the brilliant and beautiful Kelly. In adulthood, all that has changed. Kelly is a struggling single mother and Brett has skyrocketed to meteoric success that has been chronicled on a reality TV show called Goal Diggers.
When Kelly manipulates her way onto the show and into Brett’s world, Brett is wildly threatened. Kelly, and only Kelly, knows her younger sister’s appalling secret, one that could ruin her.
Still, when the truth comes out in the explosive final weekend of filming, neither of them ever expected that the season would end in murder.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Sibling rivalry has never been this vicious…or exciting to read. After making a splash with her first novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, Jessica Knoll returns with a title that’s a little bit Real Housewives and a little bit The Hunger Games. Brett is one of a group of powerful, successful stars on a reality-TV show about powerful, successful women. But the inspirational ethos quickly turns vicious—especially once her beautiful sister Kelly joins the cast. The Favorite Sister is a complex, engaging read that provides biting commentary on family, tolerance, and truth in today’s social media–driven world.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Knoll (Luckiest Girl Alive) explores the blurry line between a reality show and real life and the duplicity of family ties and friendship in this razor-sharp, darkly comic thriller. The grisly murder of spin and yoga studio entrepreneur Brett is revealed at the outset of this briskly paced whodunit; the narrative then flashes back, unfolding the complex how and why from the perspectives of narrators Brett, the overweight "least-loved sibling"; her thin and pretty sister Kelly, who abandoned a high-profile career path to be a single mom and run Brett's growing business empire; and bestselling author Stephanie. All three are contestants on the reality show Goal Diggers, which hypes the accomplishments of "unmothers and unwives" and is run by conniving and high-profile network executive Jesse. The characters compete for prominence, audience popularity, and social media buzz. It's off-screen where things take a dark turn: Brett's "enigmatic gay millennial" persona comes apart and Stephanie's bestselling memoir is exposed as anything but true. Though the mystery is engrossing enough in its own right, Knoll's novel is most notable as a potent takedown of a reality-show-obsessed culture that seeks out the spotlight rather than harder truths.

Tough read
So my resolution for this year is to finish all the books I bought and put down before starting any new ones. This was the hardest to finish by far.
I think the message in this story is “Look what women have to do to be successful in this world, see what society makes them become!”
But that doesn’t change the fact that the characters are downright hideous. I can’t believe a book exists that is just ugliness, page after page. Another message the book seems trying to convey is the fact that society values women who are “likeable”, who smile and are nice. But the women in this book aren’t just unlikeable; they are mean, catty, and selfish while preaching racial and cultural sensitivity, doing charity work, and being feminists?
So yeah I’m not sure what exactly this book was trying to do, but as far as “women empowerment” it is, to me, misguided.
