The Greatest Bed-Time Stories

The Greatest Bed-Time Stories gathers a capacious international tradition of children's literature: fairy tale, animal fable, nonsense, fantasy, moral parable, adventure, and dream vision. Its range moves from folktale-derived enchantment and talking animals to whimsical miniature worlds and darker, psychologically charged wonder tales. Familiar figures of princesses, tricksters, beasts, dolls, and lost children coexist with memorable voyages and transformations, revealing bedtime reading as both consolation and imaginative education. The contributors represent an unusually broad constellation of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century writers, folklorists, translators, and storytellers, alongside ancient fabulist and Sanskrit narrative traditions. Their work intersects with Romantic medievalism, Victorian fantasy, the literary fairy-tale revival, didactic children's writing, and the emerging modern picture-book sensibility. British, American, continental European, and South Asian inheritances meet here, demonstrating how oral lore was adapted into distinctive literary forms while retaining its ethical, comic, and communal force. Recommended for readers, families, students, and scholars of children's culture, this volume offers more than a convenient treasury of classics. It invites comparison across cultures, genres, and historical moments: between instruction and play, fear and reassurance, domestic intimacy and expansive adventure. Its many voices make bedtime storytelling a rich dialogue about imagination, conduct, childhood, and the enduring pleasure of narrative.
