Publisher Description
"A remarkable, razor-sharp debut that cuts straight to the heart."―Chelsea Abdullah, author of The Stardust Thief
A fugitive queen strikes a bargain with her greatest enemy that could resurrect her scorched kingdom or leave it in ashes forever in this unmissable, slow-burn, Egyptian-inspired epic fantasy debut.
Ten years ago, the kingdom of Jasad burned. Its magic was outlawed. Its royal family murdered. At least, that’s what Sylvia wants people to believe. The Heir of Jasad escaped the massacre, and she intends to stay hidden, especially from the armies of Nizahl that continue to hunt her people.
But a moment of anger changes everything. When Arin, the Nizahl Heir, tracks a group of Jasadi rebels to her village, Sylvia accidentally reveals her magic—and captures his attention. Now Sylvia’s forced to make a deal with her greatest enemy: Help him hunt the rebels in exchange for her life.
A deadly game begins. Sylvia can’t let Arin discover her identity, even as hatred shifts into something more between the Heirs. And as the tides change around her, Sylvia will have to choose between the life she wants and the one she abandoned.
The scorched kingdom is rising, and it needs a queen.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A young woman comes to terms with her destiny in this inspired fantasy novel. Sylvia barely escaped the Nizahl Kingdom’s slaughter of her magic-wielding family. Now, far from home and with her magic restrained, she’s forced into an uneasy alliance with Arin, the son of her sworn enemy and the boy she’s trying hard not to fall for. First-time author Sara Hashem borrows from Egyptian lore to create a lush and imaginative world and peoples it with captivating characters and political intrigue. We love how Sylvia’s complicated relationship with her heritage—and her desire to belong—feels deeply relatable despite the story’s magical elements. The first book in the Scorched Throne series makes us excited for Hashem’s follow-up.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hashem weaves a complex tapestry of magic, danger, and violence set against some vividly atmospheric worldbuilding in her mesmerizing debut. Essiya is a fugitive, the last surviving royal of the purged Jasad kingdom. Now going by Sylvia, she ekes out a furtive existence in Mahair, a city ruled by the militant Nizahlians, who burned her homeland to the ground. Torture and death await anyone accused of being a Jasadi magic-user, so Sylvia must rely on her fighting skills, feral nature, and survival instinct to get by. Hounded by ghosts of her traumatic past, she deceives and ultimately kills to keep her identity secret. However, when Sylvia catches the eye of her worst enemy, Arin of Nizahl, the heir to the Nizahlian throne, her tight grip over her own fate loosens. Arin, who doesn't know of Sylvia's royal blood, wants her help rooting out Jasadi rebels, who, meanwhile, seek to rally behind their queen. An angst-inducing game of cat and mouse begins when Arin declares Sylvia his champion in the Alcalah, a deadly tournament of fighters from all the known kingdoms. Meanwhile, an attraction as fierce as their enmity blossoms between the pair. Caught in the center of a tumultuous whirlwind, Sylvia must choose between her own safety and the lives of the people she loves. This nail-bitingly suspenseful romantasy will keep readers on tenterhooks.

Incredible slow burn
This book takes a while to get going (especially if you made the mistake of reading the publisher’s description as I did, as it gives away some major twists that happen some time into the book) but it was so worth it to me - it was a slow burn that paid off in spades by the end. This book is an especially powerful read for those who have had an abused or otherwise traumatic background.
I preordered the sequel when I finished.
