"Romantasy readers won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough." —Publishers Weekly
"Masterful storytelling with a female protagonist worth rooting for." —#1 NYT bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Explosive and enthralling romantasy debut from New York Times bestselling author Rachel Howzell Hall...
Thrown into a desolate land of sickness and unnatural beasts, Kai wakes in the woods with no idea who she is or how she got there. All she knows is that if she cannot reach the Sea of Devour, even this hellscape will get worse. But when she sees the village blacksmith fight invaders with unspeakable skill, she decides to accept his offer of help.
Too bad he’s as skilled at annoying her as he is at fighting.
As she searches for answers, Kai only finds more questions, especially regarding the blacksmith who can ignite her body like a flame, then douse it with ice in the next breath.
And no one is what—or who—they appear to be in the kingdom of Vinevridth, including the man whose secrets might be as deadly as the land itself.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
We loved the exciting mix of modern attitudes and magical world-building in this slow-burn romantasy from the prolific author Rachel Howzell Hall. When Kai wakes up in the woods near the kingdom of Vinevridth, she has complete amnesia about her surroundings and herself. But there are clues that she’s an unusual person, like her unique eyes, her striking amulet…and her ability to read minds. We loved the refreshingly modern, quippy style of Kai’s inner monologue juxtaposed with the novel’s traditional, medieval-esque fantasy setting. Things get intense when Kai realizes the kingdom is under threat from sinister outside forces, and they really kick into high gear when she begrudgingly teams up with the rude but highly skilled fighter Jadon—whose true feelings for her aren’t as secret as he thinks they are, thanks to Kai’s psychic abilities. We never wanted to leave this world full of strange creatures and dark, fascinating possibilities.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hall (What Never Happened) launches a new series with this thrilling romantasy. Kai awakens in a forest near Maford in the kingdom of Vinevridth with no memory of who she is or where she came from. After her pendant and clothes are stolen by a thief named Olivia, she tracks the woman into town, where the pair brawl, causing a commotion and destroying property. Kai is forced to pay damages with manual labor before she's allowed to leave. Until then, she must stay with Olivia and her enigmatic brother, Jadon. As she settles into her new home, hazy memories of magic return to her and her attraction to Jadon grows. But when the angry goddess Elyn swoops into town hunting for Kai, she and her new friends are forced to flee—and hope to finally discover who Kai is and what the goddess wants from her. The mystery of Kai's identity propels the plot forward (though readers will have to wait for future installments for answers), while electrifying fight scenes, otherworldly creatures, and sizzling forbidden romance add fun. Romantasy readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough.
Customer Reviews
Surprise she’s pretty and powerful
Ok stop if you’ve read this before
Main character a woman who can do no wrong. Also she’s physically stunning because you know
Also strong willed AND emotionally stable
Ta da! A complete obvious and boring character with lots of useless descriptions to draw out the word count
What a dump of a book. So many one dimensional characters it’s better to ask chatbot to add in excitement
