The Loving Spirit

As a debut novel, The Loving Spirit is an ambitious start to a long and eventful career for famed author Daphne du Maurer. A historical romance based on one family's events, du Maurer follows the Coombs from 1830 to 1930, which each generation represented by a particular family member. Each character and each section is a singular tale with a distinct voice and personality. A bit slow, and somewhat melodramatic at first, each section picks up momentum until the end section holds the same suspense found in du Maurer's signature novel Rebecca.
