Times have changed for Alwyn Scribe. Once an outlaw, he’s now a spymaster and sworn protector of Lady Evadine Courlain, whose visions of a demonic apocalypse have earned her the fanatical devotion of the faithful.
Yet Evadine’s growing fame has put her at odds with both Crown and Covenant. As trouble brews in the kingdom, both seek to exploit her position for their own ends.
Sent to the Duchy of Alundia to put down a rebellion, Alwyn must rely on old instincts to fight for his new cause. Deadly feuds and ancient secrets are laid bare as war erupts, a war that will decide the fate of the Kingdom of Albermaine and, perhaps, prevent the coming of the prophesied Second Scourge.
"A gritty, heart-pounding tale of betrayal and bloody vengeance. I loved every single word." — John Gwynne on The Pariah

Ryan again showcases his gift for epic fantasy in his excellent sequel to The Pariah. Former outlaw Alwyn Scribe is now a spymaster for noblewoman warrior Evadine Courlain, who's widely believed to be a Risen Martyr for having apparently survived death, making her a threat to both the church and the monarchy. Evadine's new celebrity comes with increased risks, and Alwyn fears her latest assignment may be a suicide mission; King Tomas Algathinet orders her to travel to Walvern Castle and hold it in his name. The edifice is rife with breaches, and Alwyn suspects that Tomas hopes it will be overrun and Evadine eliminated. That intrigue is but one of the challenges the protagonists face, as Evadine has visions of a cataclysmic event known as the Second Scourge, which may imperil the entire world—but which Evadine believes she is destined to thwart. Ryan's evocative prose enhances the suspenseful, intricate story, and the cliffhanger ending will have fans counting the days until the next volume. This fires on all cylinders.
On to Book 3
Questions lingering from the Pariah are answered in the Martyr, while new questions are posed. I only read before bed and this book had me up til the wee hours of the night. The perfect mix of believable characters, suspenseful action sequences, and supernatural intrigue makes this sequel even better than its predecessor. Can’t wait to read the third and final installment.
Plenty of plot twists
