Suspenseful to the end
Eerie from start to finish, suffused with subtle horror, this story is written in a romantic style reminiscent of Wilkie Collins or even Emily Bronte. Is orphan James Monmouth’s obsession with Conrad Vane born simply of his peripatetic life as a young man, or is it something more sinister? As each new discovery entices him deeper into his lost family’s past, is he walking into a snare; one set specifically for him...?
While the conclusion is not at all ambiguous, I wanted to know how this dynamic between the Monmouth and Vane families came to exist, which was never satisfactorily explained. But the escalating tension in the telling makes it a worthwhile read.
