Interesting beginning of a future series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Playing Pieces is an introduction to events and several characters that will appear in the series. We are introduced to about 4-5 characters, and the main character, Wendell, is pretty likeable. I personally like that he's not necessarily a fighter or an adventurer (though that may change, since the series title clearly tells us there's a war brewing). I like that we had a bit of insight into his life, and I hope the father-son relationship is built on. I hope that neither he nor his son end up dead..
The world seems interesting as well, though I am baffled by "exotic" lands and scents. What counts as exotic there, and why? I really hope it's not some sort of fetishising or tokenising POC or the like, because I will be disappointed. On this note, there were no clear indications of the characters' races (or the equivalent of them), so that was something I hope will be fixed (Even if they are white, I wish it's at least specified, because I'm tired of no description = white as the default assumption/truth).
