The Promise

The Aether: The Promise

Book Nine of The Aether

Erin Tol is getting married in the orchard, in a barn her whole family helped raise, twenty years after the fleet first took her in as a grieving, motherless midshipman. Twenty years, one death, one resurrection, and one very patient British lieutenant who never stopped bringing her coffee she didn't drink.

The Promise is the story of what comes after the war stories end — the retirement, the wedding, the daughter born into an orchard already thick with history she doesn't know yet. It's Talia growing up the way Erin once did, learning the shape of a family legacy one story at a time: a flower-crown lesson, a walk to her grandmother's grave, the night she first feels what her grandfather really is and finds, against every instinct to run, that it's just Grandpa. It's Kyra finding her own happy ending, eleven years after a broom handle and a split orange saved both their lives on the streets of Verath. And it's Erin, finally steady enough in her own skin, learning to pass down a legacy instead of just surviving it.

Not every story is about the battle. Some are about what all that fighting was actually for — and about a little girl at a wedding reception, learning her first small piece of Aether mischief from the two men who taught her mother everything, one gently tipped water glass at a time.
