Viv Galdi has had her heart broken by Jake, a boy who hooked up with her for a week over the summer only to ignore her once school started up. To get over Jake, the high school junior decides to crush on someone with less "zing" to protect her heart, devising a list of mediocre crush candidates careful to avoid including Dallas, an attractive "McNerd" who's new at school. Roberts (Playing the Player) hits all the expected notes in this straightforward romance: Viv and Dallas resist and misunderstand each other for the bulk of the novel, even as they flirt and as Viv tests the waters with her crush candidates with advice from Dallas. Avid readers will appreciate the many literary threads Roberts weaves into the story: she gives Viv and Dallas jobs in Viv's mother's independent bookstore, her mother writes "a semi-famous series of mystery novels" under a pseudonym, and Viv is a book blogger and runs a romance book club. Though the novel sticks to a fairly predictable course, it's upbeat and entertaining throughout. Ages 12 up.

Crushing my heart
Vivian AKA "Viv" meets newcomer Dallas when her mom hires him to work at their bookstore. She is attracted to him immediately and wants to avoid falling for someone her hormones lead her to. She is working on finding a interim boyfriend she won't go gaga over.
Dallas is a temptation for Viv, and he is attracted to her as well. There are many secrets they are keeping from one another. This does not stop them from starting a tentative friendship. Can these friends learn about love before its too late?
I was so intrigued by this story I could not put it down! Page after page of humble and honest feelings, (even if they were being denied) and I ate it up. This author is a pleasure to read.

Sensational
I love literally everything about this book, how laid back and easy it was to read. More books like this, yes please and thank you. You should definitely read and this is coming from someone extremely picky, so you know it’s coming from a place of honor.
P.S. I’m sad that guys like these don’t exist in real life or at least in my life because I would’ve already pocketed one.

Wow. Okay. Here we go.
I felt like I was reading a YA version of my life with "The Replacement Crush." But we'll get to that in a minute.
Nerd culture is huge in our household, so I fell in love with this book the moment Viv's cat came onto the scene. Hiddles, really? Yes, really. I was sold. Tom Hiddleston as Loki carved out a chunk of my heart (just check out my car decal or the Pop! figure of my favorite trickster dangling from my keyring for confirmation). Anyway, my love for this book began with Hiddles and grew quickly with the introduction of a quirky cast of characters.
I related a lot to Viv! I also met the love of my life (my very own McNerd!) working among thousands of books in a public library. There were hours, days, weeks, and months of coy smiles, casual conversations, and flirting. Unlike Viv and Dallas, Jon and I didn't bond over Star Trek. Our mutual interests were superheroes (particularly The Flash) and Game of Thrones--topics that kept us talking for hours on end. But reading Viv's story, one packed with awesome nerd culture, was like rewinding the past and watching myself fall in love all over again. It was amazing.

Toff's unconditional support for our heroine.

All things books (the reading club, the store, the blog, the author mom, Viv's new project, the list goes on!).
I could probably spout on and on about this one all day long. I just loved it. I've already picked up The Bookworm Crush. I can't wait to see what Toff and Amy have in store for us!
