Publisher Description
This inspiring #1 bestseller is a gutsy look at what it takes to undo a lifetime of self-sabotaging habits and feel great about the change and yourself.
Good Morning America contributor Tory Johnson is all about helping women make great things happen. And after a lifetime of obesity, of failing at fad diets and sporadic health programs, Tory was ready to make great things happen for herself -- making the shift by recognizing that it was time to lose weight once and for all, and do it her way. In twelve months, she lost more than 60 pounds, and for the first time shares what she learned, what she ate and how she changed in The Shift: How I Finally Lost Weight and Discovered a Happier Life, her most personal book yet.
In this updated trade paperback edition, Tory Johnson adds a look back at the amazing response her Shift has brought from thousands of people across the country, shares additional lessons learned in the year following the book's publication, and includes the stories of "Shifters" -- readers so inspired by her book they have made their own life-changing Shifts.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Good Morning America contributor and businesswoman Johnson's wakeup call? A carefully placed comment by a higher-up female executive convinced Johnson that her job was at risk due to her nearly 60 pounds of excess weight. Confronted by the possibility of losing her dream job, Johnson began her transition from a lifelong battle with the scale to a positive commitment to her own health and wellness. In this breezy, yet surprisingly intimate chronicle, the author traces her journey to slimness, one bite, step, and weigh-in at a time. Johnson reveals her painful past as a mostly confident girl who suffered secret shame over her weight, traces the multiple diets she embraced and abandoned, and shares her victories and setbacks. While her commitment to long-term change is commendable, occasional oversharing about buying Spanx, her reinvigorated sex life, or even the joys of her country home may be too much information for readers looking for diet tips. Additionally, her strict approach should not be taken as a health manual (and those with health problems should not adopt her rules without consulting a physician). Regardless, Johnson's positive message and commitment to sustainable long-term behavioral change make for an inspiring read.

A god send
I've been in such a difficult place with my weight for my entire life. Books, programs, workout equipment, gym memberships... I had done it all. The shift fell in my lap while browsing my iBooks app. I hesitantly downloaded the free copy wondering what one more diet book could do to help and honestly it changed my life. It was like reading my own story, only one with a happy ending. I love it and love that it's always with me for whenever I need a bit of motivation or inspiration!!!
So glad I read this book
Tory Johnson's story is my story, it is the story of so many people's weight loss journey! She writes about things nobody talks about but are part of life if you are overweight; the emotions and the struggle. I love this book because of the premise weight loss requires a SHFT. And it is not an overnight thing, persistence is key. The beauty of her story is how she found what worked for her, and the daily, almost meal by meal struggle it was to lose weight, the sacrifices. I don't agree necessarily with exactly how she did it, but it is not the point of the book - to tell me what to do; I believe in way more exercise, but the take home message is she found what worked for her eventually, and she lost the weight! The book is filled with tips, wisdom, insight, if you need to lose weight or struggle on and off with it this book is a must read .. It will help you shape your journey and your life. Inspiring honest, gritty, insightful.
Not a diet book
This is definitely not a diet book. It is an interesting read about a year in her life as she loses weight. Basically, she cuts out all carbs and is hungry a lot. Not mention of. Exercise except fot the fact that she hates it. We do get to enjoy stories about her sex life (gross). An east read and. Interesting but don't think it is a diet plan.
