Sucked me in
The Vault and The Vixen grabbed me and didn’t let go. I hadn’t read any of Adam Gaffen’s work before and was pleasantly surprised with the depth of character, particularly the first person narrator Dakota. The POV is deep and we get effectively immersed in her feelings as well as her thoughts. More than once, I felt her frustration and longing as she did.
The secondary characters Kal and Faith were fun. I look forward to reading more about them. Karl’s flippant chaos provided some nice humor to offset the seriousness of other passages. The other secondary characters were clearly homages to Donald Westlake’s Dortmunder novels but thankfully grew beyond that start.
The plot pushed credibility but didn’t break it. I was stretched to believe that a large load of emeralds could be as world changing as Kal claimed. I also found some details required the standard acceptance of skills beyond what’s normal. But there were still twists that kept me hooked, including my favorite “I didn’t see that coming, but of course.”
In the end, though, this novel isn’t about the heist. It’s about Dakota and that’s where it shines and sucked me in.
