APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
On the surface, it’s a well-trodden story: a jilted, jealous wife obsesses and falls apart over her ex-husband’s predictably much-younger fiancée. But coauthors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen smash through the clichés, springing clever surprises at every turn. Jilted wife Vanessa, her younger model Nellie, and husband Richard quickly reveal themselves to be multi-dimensional and deliciously untrustworthy characters who are very different from our first impression. A tip: don’t skip the epilogue.
Hendricks, who spent more than 20 years as a book editor, joins forces with Pekkanen (The Best of Us) to create a jaw-dropping psychological thriller. Unreliable narrator Vanessa Thompson is obsessed with her ex-husband's fianc e and on the verge of becoming unhinged. She gave up everything to have a fairy tale life in Westchester with too-good-to-be-true hedge fund manager Richard. After a series of failed fertility treatments, their marriage unraveled, and Richard leaves her for a younger woman. Hendricks and Pekkanen chronicle a marriage gone wrong through the alternating accounts of the shattered Vanessa and a vibrant, younger woman named Nellie. This is not another eye-rolling story about the jealous ex-wife stalking her replacement, as readers will discover as Vanessa's motivations are revealed. Unforgettable twists lead to shocking revelations all the way through the epilogue. 250,000-copy announced first printing. This review has been edited to remove spoilers.
Worth pushing through
The interlacing of backstories in the plot is really well done. It took me a while to get hooked but I finally did about halfway through.
The only reason I stuck with this read was because the reviews led me to believe the twist justified the slow pace. It didn’t. Far more realistic fiction than thriller. No gratification whatsoever. It wasn’t a terrible leisure read, but it was a far cry from thrilling.
The Woman Between Us
I was expecting more of a twist.
