Good portrayal
This is just skimming the surface of the challenges former military men and women face after serving in combat zones and leaving the service. Their sacrifices are way more than just leaving their families behind.
The idea is good if you can overlook the writing
Let me start by saying I like the premise of these books, but I almost didn’t make it past the first few chapters of Eli’s story. The dialogue feels repetitive and more adolescent than adult. The timeline is choppy and unclear leaving you wondering if you’re reading about something immediately following the event that just happened or if days or weeks have passed. There’s little character development beyond that of the main characters of each story. Though it’s clear the author wants to reveal each character’s personality and inner turmoil in their own book, it leaves you feeling irritable because you just don’t know enough about each character to feel invested. The writing improved slightly in Evan’s story, so I’m hoping that this is one of the author’s first books (series) and that she was still finding her writing style.
