The Woodlanders

This is Thomas Hardy at his best. There really is no author to whom I can credit giving characters such bone and flesh and distinct personality. There is so much to contemplate in the lives and doings of these 19th century souls, and a sense of melancholy affects this reader at knowing the read is finishes, the book's pages no more.
