Former Army Ranger and Wall Street whiz Travis Devine is tasked with guarding orphaned 12-year-old Betsy Odom as she goes to meet her uncle, who is up on racketeering charges. But questions about the supposed drug-related death of Betsy’s parents as well as the reappearance of Travis’ old nemesis complicate the job, putting both Travis and Betsy on edge. David Baldacci knows how to crank up the tension, making us nervous for the toughened Travis and his innocent charge. As the pair piece together the disturbing truth about what happened to her family, the story builds into an even more complex, character-driven thriller. To Die For kept us rooting for Travis and young Betsy throughout the tale—even as we wondered how they would make it through this treacherous thrill ride alive.
