Under That Oak's Shade

For years, Arden has lived the life he thought he would never have.

Far from the towering walls of Aelefort, he has found peace in the quiet village of Oakenton, where the rhythm of the seasons matters more than politics, and where his wife, Meara, and their young daughter, Liera, have given him a home worth protecting. The war he left behind has become little more than a memory, one he has buried beneath fields of barley and ordinary days.

Then a royal summons arrives.

His pardon, long promised but never fulfilled, demands a final act of service. The kingdom he abandoned is unraveling, and the council believes only a handful of veterans possess the experience to confront a growing rebellion along the western frontier. To refuse means losing everything he has rebuilt. To accept means returning to the fortress that once defined his life, and the ghosts he has spent a decade trying to forget.

As Arden journeys back toward the world he left behind, he discovers that time has changed more than kingdoms. Old loyalties have faded, familiar faces have grown older, and the place he remembered with longing no longer resembles the home he carried in his memory.

Under That Oak's Shade is the opening novel of Of The Oak and The Fortress, a character-driven fantasy about family, memory, duty, and the quiet places that shape a life. It is a story of ordinary people living beneath the shadow of history, where the greatest battles are often fought long before swords are drawn.
