Publisher Description
“A masterpiece that can compare with Steinbeck’s East of Eden. … Some books make you laugh; some make you cry; some make you think. The Prince of Tides is a rarity: It does all three.” — Detroit Free Press
A modern American classic and a sweeping family saga that spans decades, this powerful work of Southern literary fiction is the story of the volatile Tom Wingo, his brilliant but troubled twin sister, Savannah, and the complex and damaging legacy of their dysfunctional family. Moving between the sparkling glamour of New York City and the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina low country, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy’s masterwork.
“A big, sprawling saga of a novel…the kind you hole up with and spend some days with and put down feeling you have emerged from a terrible, wonderful spell.” —San Francisco Chronicle
“A literary gem . . . The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.” —The Pittsburgh Press

My god how I loved this book
My favorite book of all time
Song of the South
The Prince of Tides captivated my heart and sang to my soul in a way few novels ever have. Pat Conroy’s masterful storytelling pulls you in from the very first page, weaving a rich, emotional tapestry of love, pain, memory, and redemption. The tragedy that permeates the story is deep and often heartbreaking, yet the resilience of the characters and their journey toward healing is nothing short of magnificent.
Conroy’s prose is lyrical and evocative—each sentence feels like a brushstroke painting the complex inner lives of his characters. Tom Wingo, Savannah, Lila, Luke… each of them is rendered with such vulnerability and honesty, it’s impossible not to feel intimately connected to their sorrows and triumphs.
This novel is not just a story; it’s an experience. It explores the darkest parts of human experience while holding fiercely to hope and the power of love—especially the complicated, enduring love of family. It made me cry, reflect, and ultimately left me in awe. The Prince of Tides is a rare and unforgettable masterpiece that stays with you long after the final page.
