Publisher Description
Jack Campbell returns to the world of the New York Times bestselling Lost Fleet novels with an action-packed military science fiction series that explores the founding of the Alliance...and the men and women who fought to create it.
Earth is no longer the center of the universe. After the invention of the faster-than-light jump drive, humanity is rapidly establishing new colonies. But the vast distances of space mean that the old order of protection and interstellar law offered by Earth has ceased to exist.
When a nearby world attacks, the new colony of Glenlyon turns to Robert Geary, a young former junior fleet officer, and Mele Darcy, a onetime enlisted Marine. With nothing but improvised weapons and a few volunteers, Geary and Darcy must face down warships and armored soldiers—or die trying.
As battles rage and pirates take an increasing toll throughout the colonies, the only hope for lasting peace lies with Carmen Ochoa, a “Red” from the anarchic world of Mars, and Lochan Nakamura, a failed politician. They have a plan: to lay the groundwork for mutual defense that could someday grow into an alliance. But if their efforts don’t succeed, the growing power of aggressor worlds could turn regions of space founded on freedom into battlefields between the first interstellar empires....
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Launching a trilogy in his Lost Fleet universe, the always reliable Campbell delivers an exciting tale of interstellar adventure. Robert Geary is a colonist on a newly established world, seeking an opportunity for a new beginning. The colony council is completely unprepared for the cold reality of their new system's distance from the protection afforded by Old Earth. When the inhabitants of a neighboring star system make an attempt at extortion, Robert is the only colonist with the skills to lead a defense force. With other systems falling prey to similar attacks, Robert's settlement must stand firm or perish unremembered. Campbell's skillfully constructed tale keeps a riveting pace, making each character's personal stakes into fundamental threads woven into a high-energy whole. The conclusion is well-earned and satisfying, leaving readers eager for the next volume in this saga.

Good book
It starts off kind slow but stick with it, it makes up for it in the end!
Satisfying, not totally predictable and great tactical innovation.
Paced slow at the onset then, once the characters are in place, the action and innovation are in rapid fire. The author has a deep understanding of the stresses between military, political, and moral leadership. No murky values, but great action. Guess who comes out winners? C’mon. You know…
Pretty good
Good read. I like females in prominent roles. Over done here though... stretches the credibility of the story.
